Leadership Training

All direct-contact leaders (Cubmaster, Assistant Cubmasters, Den Leaders, and Assistant Den Leaders) are required to complete the following training:

  1. Youth Protection Training
  2. Position-Specific training
  3. Protecting God’s Children

Protection of youth is the highest priority of the Boy Scouts of America and of Immaculate Conception R.C. Church, and all recommended barriers to abuse and other recommended safety procedures are to be followed at all times. No exceptions.

 

Youth Protection Training

Youth Protection Training is an online training that must be accomplished prior to registering as an adult leader with the BSA. It takes about 45 minutes to complete, and does not need to be completed in one sitting. Here are the steps:

  1. Visit https://my.scouting.org
  2. If you are new to Scouting, click “Create Account” and follow the instructions. Otherwise, enter your username and password.
  3. Once you have successfully logged in, you will see a graphic on the right-hand side of the screen that says “Youth Protection Begins With You”. Click that.
  4. On the Youth Protection page of the BSA Learn Center first view the welcome video from Chief Scout Executive Michael Surbaugh by clicking on the video. It will open and play in another window.
  5. Under “Youth Protection Training MANDATORY”, click on the “+ Add Plan” button.
  6. Once your plan has been added, a notice will appear. Click on the title of the learning plan (“Youth Protection MANDATORY New) and a short list of modules will appear.
  7. Click the “Launch Course” button next to the first module.
  8. Click the “Start” button to launch the module, following any instructions given in that module.
  9. Upon completion, click the “- Close Course” button, which will register your status as having completed the module.
  10. Click the “< Back” button to go back to the list of the remaining modules.
  11. Repeat steps 7-10 for all four modules, and then your screen will show that your Youth Protection Training (“Y01”) is complete.
  12. Print a certificate by clicking on the printer icon and attach that to your completed BSA Adult Application.

 

Position-Specific Training

Position-specific training can either be done online through the my.scouting.org website or in-person through various trainings offered by the Washington Crossing Council, BSA, or its Hunterdon Arrowhead District. To sign up for in-person training, visit the council’s training calendar .Otherwise, follow the steps below for online training:

  1. Go to https://my.scouting.org
  2. Log in using your username and password.
  3. Once you have successfully logged in, you will see a graphic on the right-hand side of the screen that says “BSA Learn Center”. Click that.
  4. Click on “Program” at Program-Specific Training. (Do not click on Position at Position-Specific Training.)
  5. Click on “CS19 – Cub Scouting”
  6. Cubmaster and Assistant Cubmasters should select “CS19 Cubmaster Training” and Den Leaders and Assistant Den Leaders should select “CS19 Den Leader Training” by clicking the appropriate “+ Add Plan” button.
  7. The “+ Add Plan” button has now been replaced by “0% completed”. Click on either “CS19 Cubmaster Training” or “CS19 Den Leader Training”
  8. Here, the modules have been categorized in either “Before Your First Meeting”, “Before Your First Outdoor Activity”, and “Earning Your Training Strip”. Click on “Before Your First Meeting”
  9. Click the “Launch Course” button next to the first module.
  10. Click the “Start” button to launch the module, following any instructions given in that module.
  11. Upon completion, click the “- Close Course” button, which will register your status as having completed the module.
  12. Click the “< Back” button to go back to the list of the remaining modules.
  13. Repeat steps 9-12 for all the modules in that category, and then return to Step 8 to start your next category.
  14. You are considered Trained by the BSA once you have completed all modules in all categories.

 

Protecting God’s Children

All direct-contact adult leaders of ministries of parishes within the Diocese of Metuchen (of which Immaculate Conception R.C. Church is a part of, and as Pack 190 is chartered by the parish we are considered a ministry of the parish) must go through Protecting God’s Children training, including fingerprinting. This is a 2-hour classroom training session. Participation is mandatory for direct-contact leaders. There is no fee but you must pre-register for the course. Do not bring your children as the course content is intended for adults only.

  1. Go to www.virtusonline.org
  2. Click on “First-Time Registrant”.
  3. Click “View a list of sessions”
  4. Select “Metuchen, NJ (Diocese)” and click “Select”
  5. Find a date and location that works for you, then click “Start Registration”
  6. Create a User ID and Password for yourself
  7. Once you have logged-in, you should see a list of training locations and dates. (If you don’t, then look in Toolbox > Training and scroll down to register for additional upcoming trainings.)
  8. Find a location and date that works for you, and register.
  9. Attend the course.
  10. At the end of the course, obtain a certificate. The certificate is posted on http://www.virtusonline.org in about 1 week or a paper copy can usually be obtained immediately from the course instructor. Instructions for fingerprinting are also given at the end of the course.
  11. Send an electronic copy of the certificate or provide a hardcopy to the Pack committee chair (or Training Coordinator) for our records.

 

BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation)

If a den is conducting a family camping trip, then one leader on that trip must have taken BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) training. this is an in-person training offered by our council (usually) twice each year in April/May and October.
