What is Cub Scouts?

Cub Scouts is an active program for children in kindergarten through fifth grade that encourages learning, friendship—and most of all—getting out and having fun! With an emphasis on outdoor events, small gatherings, and activities with family, Cub Scouts is a great way to let your kids safely socialize, learn, and have fun.

As a member of Cub Scouts, your child will be placed into a “den” – a grouping of about 6-8 other Scouts in the same grade as your child. Your den will meet multiple times a month and complete various “adventures” which teach Scouts leadership skills and the value of service, and help build confidence to try new things.

In addition, Scouts from all dens will meet once a month for a larger “pack” meeting. At pack meetings, attendees recognize achievements from Scouts and often participate and larger, more involved activities. Packs in different areas of the United States are given numbersours is Pack 190!

Check out the video for a brief introduction to the Cub Scouts program.

Why Should My Child Join?

Most kids join Cub Scouts because it’s fun, but the Cub Scout program is a lot more than that! The activities your child participates in as a member of Cub Scouts builds leadership and character strengths. It builds new confidence and social skills. It teaches the value of service and citizenship and working together to help others in need.

Cub Scouts is also a program full of fun activities! While many know Scouting as a program with an emphasis on the outdoors, today it’s much more than that. As a Cub Scout, your child will get a chance to participate in lots of different types of activities from traditional camping trips and building a pinewood derby car to creating science projects and playing sports.

Visit the Pack 190 Events page to learn more about the specific events that our pack participates in throughout the year.

Who Can Join Cub Scouts?

Cub Scouts are open to both boys and girls. Children in grades kindergarten through fifth grade can join Cub Scouts. For Pack 190, Scouts do not need to be enrolled in a Clinton-area school, although most are students in the Clinton Township School District (Patrick McGaheran or Round Valley) or Immaculate Conception School.

Scouts are placed in dens upon joining based on their school grade and gender. There are no co-ed dens, so if your child is a girl, she will be placed in a den consisting solely of girls.

Each child will be given a Scout “rank” upon joining based on their school grade. The various ranks are:

What about Dues and the Uniform?

Dues

As of 2022, parents must pay a $40 registration fee for their child to join Cub Scouts as a member of Pack 190.

In addition, parents must pay Pack 190 dues. Cost of dues are at minimum $200, but Scouts can reduce the amount they need to pay in dues by participating in an annual fundraiser at the start of the school year. The more a Scout sells during the annual fundraiser, the lower their individual dues will be for that year.

While the minimum cost of dues may seem high, note that these dues cover costs for your child to participate in many Cub Scout events throughout the year. You’ll find that registration costs for many events and food at events are often provided without additional cost since the dues paid at the beginning of the year covered the cost of these items. Your child is encouraged to participate in the start-of-the-year fundraiser to keep dues as low as possible.

Both the registration fee and Pack 190 dues must be paid at the start of each year.

Uniform

You’ll need to purchase a uniform for them to wear at den and pack meetings and Scouting events throughout the year. The specific uniform components will differ based on your child’s Cub Scout rank (which is based upon their grade in school). For more information about the different Cub Scout uniform components, visit the Cub Scout Uniform page on the Boy Scouts of America website.

Locally, Scout uniforms can be purchased at Flemington Department Store on Route 31 in Flemington, NJ.

Talk to a Pack 190 leader about the specific uniform components you’ll need to purchase if you are unsure.

What is Boy Scouts of America’s
Commitment to Safety?

Boy Scouts of America takes safety for its Scouts very seriously. To ensure that Cub Scouts is a safe environment for your child, all Cub Scout leaders must complete mandatory youth protection training and criminal background checks. In addition, one-on-one adult and youth interactions are not permitted. For more information about Boy Scouts of America’s commitment to Scout safety, visit the Scouting Safely page on the BSA website.
