Pack 190 Pinewood Derby
Start Your Engines!
The Pinewood Derby
The Pinewood Derby is the iconic activity of Cub Scouting. Pack 190 hosts its Pinewood Derby each year in January. Pinewood Derby car kits are provided by the pack in November. Pinewood Derby cars are judged on various aspects of design. Over a period of 6 to 8 weeks, Cub Scouts design, build, and decorate their cars for race day with limited adult assistance. Extra kits can be purchased for a small fee.
Unlike traditional pinewood derbies, Pack 190’s awards are based on creativity and car design, so Scouts don’t need to have the fastest car to win! Dens and parents are strongly encouraged to help Cub Scouts who do not have access to tools and set aside some time to paint, weigh, and prepare for the race so everyone can take part.
On Race Day:
On Race Day, each car is inspected and those that comply with the rules are placed in the impound lot for the race. Cars that do not comply must be modified in order to enter, so make sure to arrive early to allow time for adjustments if necessary. Each car will be entered into a Den class (Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelo, or Arrow-of-Light) and will race multiple times, once on each lane. At the end, scouts will be awarded prizes based on creativity and car design. The categories for 2022 are:
- Most Patriotic
- Most Futuristic
- Most Non-Car Like
- Most Scout Spirit
- Most Colorful
- Most Creative
- Best Craftsmanship
- Fastest Looking
Each category will feature first, second, and third place winners, and there will be an additional Scouts’ Choice Award.
